Poem: A Loose Shadow

A Loose Shadow

Take a deep breath
to draw in your shadow
til it touches
the bottoms of your feet.
There it will stay
until you cut it loose again
to wander.

That second star to the right
casts little enough light
to find your way to morning,
yet somehow
all the shadows feel like home
in the dark.

It’s so easy to fade
and disappear into the edges.
The light reveals too much,
while the dark is deep and somber,
comfortable, tempting you
one step further to the black.

Eternal midnight
in a moonless, endless sky
is so damned enticing
for a shadow cut loose
from the world.
Hold firm
or it may not return.
