Poem: Ebb and Flow

Ebb and Flow

Keep to the edges.
Avoid the middle.
Words to live by
until the world pushes
and calls me out.
Fighting, kicking,
screaming inside,
they’ll never know.
Beaten,
I smile a smile
that doesn’t reach my eyes,
always wondering
if anybody sees
the truth
as I swim
through the crowd
to the safety
of a window,
looking out,
longing for the freedom
I never felt
but miss
all the same.
