Poem: Illusory Twine

Illusory Twine

Imagined pain’s still painful
in this wonky brain of mine.
Sure, stubbing a toe hurts
but what about the belief
you’ve done lasting damage
to a 30 year relationship
by saying NO.
My mind wraps itself tight
around that axle of thought
until everything stops moving.
Some days I have to stub my toe
just to break its hold
like some illusory twine
stuck in a lawn mower.
The trick I find
is to not lose any fingers
while that blade is still spinning.
